Hiking and Biking

Humboldt Redwoods State Park has been rated one of the best areas for mountain biking in the country, making it the perfect place to show off your skills. The tracks run across the park and range from easy to difficult, making them ideal for beginners and seasoned cyclists.

The area surrounding Fortuna is also woven with miles of hiking trails that are clearly marked, making them easy to explore on foot. Take the trail up Fortuna Mountain for a moderately difficult hike with stunning views that make the effort well worth it. For a longer trek, the 11 mile Elk River Trail runs along an old logging road and through what remains of an abandoned logging town. It continues through a dense redwood forest and although the first few miles are paved, the rest of the path gives you a good workout. If you want to find out more about the area as you hike, the Salmon Creek Hiking Trail is ideal. Volunteers and park rangers guide you along the route, providing a unique perspective on the forests of Headwaters as you go.

Before you set out, here are some things to keep in mind:

• Some hiking trails are closed during the winter months, so always check before heading out.

• Wear appropriate shoes and clothing and make sure you take plenty of water with you.

• Pack a picnic and make the most of the stunning views along the way.
