Whether you’re hiking, kayaking or biking, it’s almost impossible not to meet some of our local wildlife. Heading to the lower Eel River just outside of Fortuna is a prime spot to find some of the local residents in their natural habitat. Depending on the time of year you can see King salmon, seals and river otters. Deer occasionally drop by for a drink and there have even been sightings of bald eagles and mountain lions in the area. For avid bird watchers, the Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge is home to thousands of migratory birds, including swans, ducks and geese. Trails run through the wetlands and many pass by open water where seals can often be spotted.
